Fragment I
2025
Aluminum 5052-H32, acrylic, hardwares
Imagine a future where humanity has lost Earth and now lives in space. Seeking a connection to their past, they create furniture using the most accessible material—space debris. Over time, their physical form has changed so much that they no longer remember furniture's function.
The first piece is a stool that cannot be sat on. Inspired by Vanguard 1, the second successful U.S. satellite and the oldest piece of space debris, I designed this stool using aluminum 5052-H32, titanium, and Vanguard 1’s solar cell, radio transmitter, and antenna system. Its fragile structure is held together without screws, with each part supporting the other.
This sculpture is a ghostly remnant of human civilization—familiar yet non-functional. The furniture form is present but distorted, fragmented, or missing key parts, suggesting a loss of purpose. Space debris, now the most abundant material, is not repurposed for function but for memory, turning this into an act of reflection rather than utility.
